England – In strategic turmoil...

Yes, I’m writing this. Just to clarify, I’m also writing this in my complete senses. I’m probably one of the biggest fans of the English game and the EPL, which by default, makes me support England too. But then, the last 2 games of the world cup, which have featured England, have made me realize the true meaning of ‘STRATEGY’. Yeah, the word is all over the place. You talk of business strategy, market strategy, product strategy, it’s everywhere, and in simple terms what does it mean – A PLAN.
Does England have it when they get on the football field? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO……..
Eleven individually talented players, eleven exceptionally skillful men with the ball at their feet, all eleven of them world class in their own right, and one _______ (you fill it up!!!) as a manager. Yes, I’m talking about Sven. This article’s not about England’s shambolic performance at the world cup so far, but is about England’s shambolic management in the world cup so far!!
Firstly, don’t blame any of the players. All of them are doing what they’ve been told to do. And who tells them what to do – Sven Goran Ericcson! A guy whose already hung up his boots and is hardly bothered about England’s progress / doom in this world cup. A guy whose been with this team for the last 5 years and has hardly done anything to suggest, that he was the right man for this job. A guy who seems to have to the least amount of passion for the job, or the country, or its players, or its fans – at least he shows very less. Let me give you examples, infact lets analyze individual players:

The Captain – David Beckham. For me, he’s the Sourav Ganguly of India. Ok, I might be too harsh on him by saying that, but he’s very close. Amazing looks, no disputing that. If I were a woman, I’d have tripped for him as well. But let’s talk football. For me, he shouldn’t start, or even if he does, he should come off at half time or so, especially if the game goes the way it did against T&T. He is the prime reason, behind England’s lack of pace. He negates all of it, simply because he can’t make any kind of darting runs at defenders. For England to progress far in this tournament, they have to inject pace into themselves, and Beckham’s presence will kill it on the right flank.
Let’s talk at what Beckham does best – To deliver classy balls in the box. Alright, you have Crouch now. But then, Rooney’s fit and he is most likely to start against Sweden and for all the remaining games of the World Cup. Owen partnering him would be an obvious choice. Both short guys, which in effect means, that Beckham’s crosses into the box are negated, and England will have to revert to the short passing game.
Now in a situation like this, whose gotta take a call – The coach. Will he? I doubt it, seriously! Beckham will play 90 minutes of all England games, rest assured, as long as Sven is at the helm of things, and adding salt to injury, would be the fact that Crouch will start too, to support what Beckham’s primarily there to do.
The kingpin – Steven Gerrard. For me, he’s the best player in the World, and what’s he best at doing – Controlling the play. Has he been allowed to do that with England? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO…..
In more ways than one, England have sinned themselves by bringing out 2 exceptionally talented midfielders, Lampard & Gerrard at the same time. Both play the same kind of football, in the same position, excepting the fact that Gerrard gets back more often to help his defenders out, forcing him to play 2nd fiddle to Lampard when they pair up for England. People, who’ve seen Gerrard play for Liverpool, especially over the last season, couldn’t have ignored the metal he’s made off.
So what does Sven do again? Nothing, I mean nothing. He continues to play both of them in the same position, and you can see, Gerrard is not happy & is neither comfortable, but country comes first, doesn’t it! Truly experienced coaches have the power to identify loopholes like these and fix it immediately. Sven I’m sure has the brains to figure it out as well, or the press might have told him by now, but the difference being – He’s too afraid to do something about it.
For me, I’ve always maintained it. England should at least try playing 5 in midfield, with Carragher or Owen Hargreaves playing the holding role in midfield. This gives both Gerrard & Lampard to oppurtunity to push up, create a link up with the forwards and thus crack open defences. Remember, this also gives Gerrard the opportunity to show the power of his right foot from 25-30 yards out, the stuff he’s been dishing out for Liverpool regularly over the last season. I still do remember, Sven had the audacity to try this out during one of the qualifiers, and it worked wonders, with Ledley King doing the holding role. But why did he try it then? Only because one of his regular forwards (I don’t remember who!) was injured, so he just left 1 upfront and played 5 across the middle of the park. How can he do it now, with both Owen & now Rooney fit as well? is the million dollar question.
Innovation i believe, is totally lost on this guy.
The motivator – Wayne Rooney. Ask any English fan, whose gonna get the goals at the World Cup, pop comes out one name – Rooney. His injury was most unfortunate for himself and England. But ofcourse, the Gods must’ve been crazy, to get him fit so quickly. Nevertheless, he’s not gonna get goals out of nowhere, he needs support, which ain’t coming right now, because of the mind block Sven has created for himself and England in midfield. Though, no one would dispute the fact that he’s one helluva motivator. If not for him coming on against T&T, England might have well settled for a draw.
The silent performer – Joe Cole. For me, he’s England’s trump card. He’s been quietly performing week in, week out for Chelsea and has in the process solved one of England’s biggest nightmares – The search for a left sided midfielder! The only one in the England squad right now, whose got the ‘ballzzz’ to run at defenders and beat them too.
The Rock – John Terry. He’s the sole reason why I believe England are still tough to beat in this World Cup. If his goal line clearance against T&T is anything to go by, then rest assured, scoring against England is as tough as it can get. Ok, England aren’t scoring goals, or aren’t playing the kind of football they’re known or supposed to play, but they’re not conceding either, and that’s the only positive aspect for them so far, the credit of which largely goes to this man in my dock right now.
The poacher – Micheal Owen. Class is permanent, form is temporary. I believe, it’s just a matter of time. Leave this guy alone for a while, and he’ll get back to doing what he does best. Scoring goals! Yet again, don’t squarely blame him, because the midfield right now is just not doing enough to facilitate him.
The creator – Frank Lampard. I believe this guy is confused. His understanding with Gerrard has not been of the highest quality, leaving him in the wrong positions with the wrong frame of mind most of the time, not sure whether to shoot or to pass. Yet another illustration of the doom England are bringing upon themselves with Sven’s rigidity.
The rest, Paul Robinson, Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand & Gary Neville, well, they aren’t doing anything substantially great or grave to alter the course of things. So let’s just let them be.
I don’t know how many of you know about Sam Allerdyce – The Bolton Wanderers coach. If I was the president of the FA, I’d have paid him bombs to get him here and manage this team. Cuz, after all it takes someone like him and his pedigree (going by what he’s done at Bolton over the years) to change the fortunes of this team, and more so, he is English!!!
Overall, I’d still support this team till their last appearance in this World Cup, but can’t help appalling the tactics of the Ol’ man. Add to it his attitude or the lack of it, and any English fan across the globe would boil with fury. Going by what Argentina did to S&M yesterday, going by what Spain did to Ukraine, or going by what the Czech did to USA, if England continue this way, the last 8 (maybe, that’s an overestimation as well, if they end up meeting the host team in the round of 16) will be the farthest they will get..
Wake up Sven, wake up. Be a MAN.

ya they have been letting us down really bad.but hopefully they learn from the last two games and take a lesson or two from brazil.
brazil has so many stars yet they play as a team...thats something england are still strugling to do

man u are right. for an avid fan of the epl and thus england the world cup so far has been nothing but disappointing. i firmly believe beckham should not start and gerrard should play from the right....more importantly if possible terry shouldd be the captain for; for those who follow chelsea 'll know what a leader he is....bekham is a shadow of himself....actuall that brings me to one more topic...is'nt real madrid quite a "sucker" -beckham,woodgate,ronaldo,owen...what does the club feed them????

@ Pavan...
well i kinda agree with u partly..but after seeing brazil in the WC...they sure a just a touch better than england i think...
Both teams suffering from alter ego's methinks..

@ Sid..
I couldnt agree with you more..infact..ive just missed mentioning it in the post..Terry must and should be captain !! for sure...as for Madrid - well...if ur gonna change 5 coaches in like 1 1/2 seasons..u cant expect wonders with 11 brilliant players too...thats the reason ive got immense respect for Rijkaard...for what he's done for Barca over the last 2 seasons...

Am a regular to ur blog and am a big fan of ur writing, so keep them coming....
I ll give my take on a few things that u've written about..Firstly the captain, Beckham.I ve never been a fan of this guy.But gotta give the devil his due, this guy has been playing decent.. Both the matches that England have won so far in this WC has been because of him!!But I think England can do without him, I would play Owen Hargreaves instead of him to bolster the defence and sorta balance the midfield a little bit more allowing gerrard and lampard to go forward.
The biggest problem that england r facing is a paucity of goals.I believe they r playing the wrong strikers.Crouch is useless,he cannot bring the ball up frm midfield, does not pass the ball, the only thing is he can score off crosses, that i believe is not good enuff.I would put Michael Owen in the same category,he is more of an opportunist. If he finds a loose ball in the box, he'll score but looks very rusty and has not played enough games after his injury.Rooney's the talisman, but i wonder as to whether he can survive the whole campaign. Remember what happened to Beckham who came into the last WC recovering frm a similar injury!! What I would really love to c is Theo Walcott play. I hear he's got the pace to worry the defenders,he's supposed to have kicked Terry's arse in training(who by the way i consider to be the best defender in the world).
Joe Cole should be playing just just behind the 2 strikers(Rooney and Walcott), a sort of a role similar to kaka and ronaldinho. i think he is good enuff.Gerrard and Lampard should have the license to go forward and play the roles that they play for their clubs with hargreaves helping out the defence manned by terry...My ideal formation for england will be 4-3-1-2.
Finally To Mr.Ericsson, for a team that has so much of attacking talent, he encourages them to defend after going 1-up..Maybe that has something to do with him having been a coach in Italy(for Lazio)..He is too defensive minded and that cost them the match against Brazil at the last WC and have a feeling that its gonna cost them again. He is not the ideal coach for england and i fear his replacement will be worse!!! Like u said Allardyce would have been a better choice.
If they face Germany in the next round, i dont see them going through...

@ yash...
firstly..thanks for the compliment...
now getting down to business..its true that the goals in the past 2 games have actually resulted from beckham's passes, but its also true, that England would've still managed to find the goals if not for Beckham's presence. I always believed that he was a liability to this team, and my belief was only enhanced more, when i saw Aaran Lennon come on against T&T. For me, he was extremely impressive in that 30 min. display on the pitch, wherein he made some incisive runs at defenders, and delivered a few very good crosses into the box as well. Moreso, he injected pace, which for me is the most important and lacking thing about england right now.
I couldnt agree with you more about Crouch, tho I wouldnt be so hard of Owen! Guess, I do have a soft corner for him somewhere, since he's ex-Liverpool afterall. Also, I'm not that confident of Owen Hargreaves, cuz' frankly I havent seen much of the guy. Would preferably have an experienced campaigner like Carragher play the holding role, or inface Phil Neville too, but sadly he's not in this squad!
you spoke about Theo Walcott. Yes, its true that he did kick terry's arse in training, but i again would have to hold back my views on this guy, cuz I havent ever seen him play. The next 2 1/2 hours or so should provide answers to our questions, as Ive just read, that Owen and Rooney would start, but both shall not last 90 mins, and the likely replacements are Crouch & Walcott. I also did mull over the fact that Joe Cole could come into the centre of midfield, but then cant help to wonder, as to who would patrol the position 'LM'. Frankly, Gerrard & Lampard are good enough to maintain their ground in the middle i believe.
And I didn't know that Ericsson had Italian links, now helps me put 2 & 2 together for a story. And seeing Germany trounce Ecuador just now, England wouldnt really have a chance if they bump into the host team.
The next 4 hours holds the key, so patience right now, is the name of the game.

Hi AJ{AX},
I happened to come across your blog while googling for SIT tumkur. A very nice blog you have here.
My name is Patrick Manoj.I was a student of SIT Tumkur and passed out in '97. I am presently in Charlotte, NC, U.S.A.
I am sorry about your friend Chaitu. He looks like a sweet guy.

you have also posted about Halcyon.. just wanted to let you know.. Did you know ..that Halcyon was first conceived
when we were there in 1994. and i am the first person to win a prize at Halcyon. The first event was mock press . Since it was the first time we were conducting a fest, a group of us went to Manipal to see how a cultural fest should be conducted. :-).. also a guy called Kiruba Shankar (www.kiruba.com) was the main pioneer. He was the first guy to talk to the management of our college (principal Dr.Channabasappa, HOD elec i think Basavaraju.. Sorry if i get the names wrong) and got the funding approved.. It was an Himalayan task those days. and many of the professors disagreed with it. Nice to know about your involvement and how Halcyon has grown. and keep up your blogging.. its refreshing.. and i love your style of writing.

hey man..its great to get to know you this way. Thanks for the facts about Halcyon, its something i'm very attached too. Worked my socks out for 3 full years, 2002, 03, & 04 while i sat back and enjoyed the fun in 05 & 06 watching the juniors run helter & skelter. Firstly, thanks to you and your team for initiating the concept of Halcyon, and for getting it through. I do understand the herculean effort it mustve taken you guys to pass it through. Every year we face a miniscule of the same situation when we try introducing a new event or ask for an increase in budget ! But also, do let me know who coined the word Halcyon and who decided to name our fest - Halcyon. Kudos to that person, cuz the name is simply amazing !

Hi AJ{AX},
The best person to ask that is Kiruba Shankar at www.kiruba.com. there were a few guys mainly.. Dev Amritesh, (the first rock band of SIT) called Rubberband, and a few other guys.
also did you know.. we were also the first batch to introduce Ethnics day (were we dressed up in native clothes), at SIT.. i don't know if you guys still follow that..
Thanks
Patrick

@ Patrick
Thanks mate for the info. I sure will visit that site and get more nostalgic details about Halcyon. As for Ethnic day, yeah it still is followed, tho in most cases, it turns out to be hardly Ethnic, what with the dress wear people @ SIT seem to endorse these days. And yeah, I have heard of the rubberband during my tenure there, nice to know it originated from you guys..

Let me try to answer your question - The name Halcyon was coined in Room No 20 of BV block in 1993. The Key people were "Kiruba", Sudham, Akshay, Amar, Arvind and myself Dev. You know we were referred to as the "HAL GROUP" in those days. Even today we breathe Halcyon - our egroups is called "halcyondays@yahoogroups.com"

FYI Halcyon is a bird whose first sighting signifies the coming of spring and leads to celebrations.

1994 was the first year. we did Halcyon - our budget was Rs 75,000/- and we had an unprecedented participation from 29 collegs. I remember I did not sleep for 81 hours, as I was participating in 8 events, organising 3 (JAM was one of them) and practising like crazy on the first rock band of SIT called "DHWANI" - rubberband was the second one. It makes my heart swell with pride that u guys still do it and your feelings and experience seem to be so similar to what we went through ! Some thread seems to have remained planted in Tumkur that u guys picked up. Man have u made me senti today...after 10 years of moving away !!

in case u have any more questions on Halcyon - feel free to write to me at devamritesh@yahoo.com
